City of Danville Residents Directory Basics

Danville runs its own court system, police force, and clerk's office. You do not need to call a county clerk for a Danville record. The city handles it all out of a few buildings near downtown. The City of Danville portal is the front door for most resident searches. From there you can reach the police, the courts, the city clerk, and the real estate office. The site lets you make an account so you can save form progress and track requests.

Records here fall into a few buckets. Court files live with the Circuit Court Clerk. Police reports come from the Danville Police records unit. Marriage licenses sit at the Circuit Court. Land and tax data is held by the city. The city clerk keeps council minutes, city ordinances, and admin files. Most are open under state law.

Take a quick look at the Danville city government homepage at danville-va.gov to see how the layout points to each office.

Danville Police Department Records

The Danville Police Department is the main law enforcement agency in the city. The department keeps records of every incident, arrest, traffic crash, and case it works. Most files are open under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, with a small set held back for active cases. Call 911 in a true emergency. For all other questions, use the non-emergency line listed on the city site.

The records unit handles requests for incident reports, accident reports, and arrest records. You need basic case info and a small copy fee. Crash reports for an insurance claim can be sent right to the carrier when you give written consent. Have the case number, date, or address ready when you call. That speeds things up.

For a deeper look at the department, see the Danville Police page. The city posts a crime map and shares stats with the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

Danville is part of the 22nd Judicial Circuit. The city runs a Circuit Court, a General District Court, and a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The Danville Courts page lists each clerk and phone line.

The Circuit Court Clerk takes care of felonies, civil suits over $25,000, divorces, marriage licenses, deeds, wills, and estates. This is the office for most big court files. The clerk can pull a case in person or look it up by name. General District Court hears misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, and felony preliminary hearings. The juvenile court handles custody, child support, and protective orders. Plain copies cost about $0.50 a page. Certified copies cost more.

For statewide case search, use the Virginia Judicial System at vacourts.gov. The case status portal lets you search by name across all general district and most circuit courts. For bulk data and CSV downloads, see the Virginia Court Data Portal. Federal cases for this part of the state are heard in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

The Danville court page is the best starting point for case lookups, hours, and clerk phone numbers in one spot.

Public Records Under Virginia FOIA

City records in Danville are public under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Va. Code § 2.2-3700. The act says all writings prepared or held by a public body are open unless a specific exemption applies. The law has to be read in favor of access. The city must reply to a request within five working days. You do not have to give a reason.

The Danville City Clerk handles many citywide FOIA requests. The clerk also keeps council minutes, ordinances, and other admin files. You can email, call, or send a written note. List the records you want and add as much detail as you can. Fees may be charged for staff time and copies. Ask for a cost estimate first if you think the request will run high.
